radio radio
National Public Radio didn’t exist for me until the 90s. That’s when I moved close to the U.S. border and tuned to WDET Detroit. I liked it but found it strange. It seemed more like a college station with some national news and current affairs. Since I grew up in Calgary, far from the border, I was used to CBC Radio, high quality local shows like the Eyeopener and national shows like As It Happens (still on the air) and Morningside (long gone). But the biggest difference was hearing NPR beg for money. Why would a “public” broadcaster need to ask for donations? Of course, public is different in America. Here in Canada, taxes have paid for the CBC since the 1930s. NPR is non-profit with federal subsidy. Until Trump slashed that part. Now my podcast feeds are filled with NPR pleading for more money. Sorry guys. My taxes already pay for public radio and frankly, some Canadian politicians want to chop funding here too. So, you Americans are welcome to all the free CBC podcasts you want courtesy of my taxes. Sorry NPR, I won’t be paying for yours.
